Subjects: Teenager detained in Bali

Transcript E&OE, proof only.

25 November 2011

KEVIN RUDD: The Australian Government welcomes the decision by the court in Bali concerning this young lad. This has been obviously a traumatic time for him and his family. I'm sure there are lessons to be learned by this young man as well.

We'd like very much to thank the Indonesian authorities for their assistance in the conduct of this case, for the speedy way in which it's been handled against all Indonesian norms. And secondly, the arrangements which have been made for this young man for his accommodation during the course of this procedure.

I would also like to publicly acknowledge my thanks to the Australian consular staff in Bali, and our Ambassador in Jakarta, Ambassador Moriarty who has been attending to this case with a great degree attention and detail and sympathy and support for the family in dealing with these rather difficult circumstances.

And also, bearing in mind that they are simultaneously working on whole range of other cases in Bali which are of direct concern to those families as well.

But in overall terms, I think it's good that this family and this young man, it looks like, will be home for Christmas.
