Media release

Canberra

13 June 2011

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Kevin Rudd has today announced that Mr Trevor Peacock will be Australia's next High Commissioner to Cyprus.

Mr Peacock is expected to take up his appointment in August 2011 and he replaces Mr Evan Williams who has been High Commissioner since June 2008.

Australia and Cyprus enjoy a warm and longstanding relationship, based on strong community linkages, shared democratic values and cooperation in multilateral forums such as the Commonwealth and United Nations.

Australia remains fully supportive of international efforts to assist with the settlement negotiations, through Australia's Special Representative for Cyprus and our long and continuing commitment to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus. We encourage both sides to work with renewed momentum to achieve a just and lasting solution that re-unifies Cyprus on the basis of a bi-zonal and bi-communal federation.

Mr Peacock is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). He is currently Director, Trade Policy Section, a position he has held since January 2010. Mr Peacock has previously served overseas as Australia's Ambassador to Jordan, Chargé d'Affaires, Australian Embassy Sweden and Chargé d'Affaires, Australian Embassy Lebanon, with earlier postings to Italy and Greece.

Mr Peacock holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from the University of Queensland. He is married.
