Senator Bob Carr has made an historic visit to Algeria, becoming the first Australian Foreign Minister to visit the country.

Algerian Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci hosted the visit which saw ministers canvass views on a full range of bilateral and global issues.

Senator Carr also held productive discussions with the President of Algeria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and met ministerial colleagues of Mr Medelci, including Minister of Energy and Mines, Youcef Yousfi.

Senator Carr said he appreciated his Algerian interlocutors’ perspectives on regional issues, including counter-terrorism, and on developing the bilateral economic relationship.

During the visit, Senator Carr and Mr Medelci signed an MOU establishing regular policy consultations between the two countries.

“The MOU is a measure of the value we see in exchanging views on regional and global developments,” Senator Carr said.

“My visit confirms Australia’s strong interest in expanding and strengthening its links with Algeria and other North African countries.”

Algeria celebrates the 50th anniversary of its independence this year on 5 July.
