Diplomatic Appointment - Ambassador to Germany

Today I announce the appointment of Mr Peter Tesch as Australia’s Ambassador to Germany. Mr Tesch replaces Mr Ian Kemish AM who has been Ambassador since April 2006.

Mr Tesch is expected to take up his appointment in October 2009.

He will also be accredited as Australia's non-resident Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
Australia's relationship with Germany is warm and wide-ranging. Germany is the world's fourth-largest economy, its largest merchandise exporter and a central player in European and global economic, security and climate change affairs.

Germany ranks tenth among Australia's trading partners and sixth among our sources of foreign direct investment. Our people-to-people links are strong. Germans and Australians have wide-ranging interest in each other's culture and Australia is a popular overseas destination for German tourists and students.

The recent visit by the Prime Minister to Germany has laid the foundation to deepen and broaden Australia's dialogue with Germany on key international issues such as climate change, the global economic crisis, international security and the Asia Pacific region.

We also see considerable scope to build on our existing strong economic ties. Australia works closely with Germany in support of the Government's objectives and interests in the European Union.  Australia and Germany also work actively together in the G20.

In addition to hosting a range of important international organisations, such as United Nations Offices and the World Trade Organisation, Switzerland is an important investment partner for Australia. Switzerland ranked as Australia's fifth largest source of foreign direct investment in 2008. The Government is keen to see these strong economic ties develop further.

Mr Tesch is currently Commissioner-General for Australia and Executive Director, Shanghai World Expo 2010, a position he has held since January 2008.

He has held several Senior Executive Service positions in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and worked in the Office of the Minister for Trade, Parliament House (1993 - 94).
Mr Tesch has also served overseas as Deputy Permanent Representative, Australian Permanent Mission to the United Nations, New York (2002 - 05); Ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan (1997 - 99) and Third Secretary, Australian Embassy Moscow (1989 - 91).

Mr Tesch holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours from the University of Queensland. Mr Tesch speaks German and Russian.
