Diplomatic Appointment: Ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

Mr Glenn White is to be Australia’s new Ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, succeeding Mr Trevor Peacock, who has been Ambassador since December 2005.

Mr White is expected to take up his appointment in January 2009.

Australia and Jordan enjoy a long-standing and warm bilateral relationship.  Australia's principal exports to Jordan are live sheep, dairy and meat products.  Our trade relationship is expanding into new areas, particularly education services.

Australia welcomes increasing cooperation with Jordan on a range of political and strategic issues.

Australia recognises Jordan's important role in the Middle East.  We share the goal of peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  Jordan plays a key role in supporting Iraq's political, economic and security reconstruction.

Mr White is a career Departmental officer and is currently Director of the Southern Europe Section.  Prior to this he was Deputy Head of Mission in Baghdad (2006-07), Deputy Head of Mission in Riyadh (2002-05) and First Secretary in Suva (1997‑2000).

Educated at the Australian National University, Mr White holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Anthropology.  He is married and has three children.  He joined the Australian Public Service in 1973.
