Council for Australian-Arab Relations: Appointment of new Members

I am pleased to announce the appointment of three new members to the Council for Australian-Arab Relations (CAAR):  Dr Peter Barnard, Ms Victoria Owen and Mr John Rothwell AO.

The new members bring to the Council a wealth of experience and expertise with the Arab region that will greatly assist CAAR.  Dr Barnard is the General Manager, Economic Planning and Market Services, of Meat and Livestock Australia;  Ms Owen is a former Australian Ambassador to Syria and Egypt;  and Mr Rothwell is the Executive Chairman of Austal Ships Pty Ltd.

CAAR was established in January 2003 to strengthen ties between Australia and Arab countries.  It works to enhance people-to-people links between Australia and the Arab world through support for activities including professional and cultural exchanges, and the promotion of trade and investment, tourism and education.

New activities the Council is taking forward include a scholarships program and a Young Professionals Exchange Program, which aim to promote awareness of Australia in the Arab region and to improve the general level of knowledge in Arab countries about Australian education opportunities.
