I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Glen Simpson as the new Chairman of the Council for Australian-Arab Relations (CAAR). Dr Simpson succeeds Ms Pru Goward, who resigned  from the Council on 21 April 2007.

Dr Simpson has been a member of the Council since June 2006.

Dr Simpson brings to the role of CAAR chairman a wealth of experience, having worked in the past on development programs across the world including a wide range of Arab countries.

The Council for Australian-Arab relations was established in January 2003 to help expand contacts and cooperation between Australia and the Arab World.

Australia has a large, diverse and long-standing Arab community. A quarter of a million people declared their Arab ancestry in the 2001 Australian Census and Arabic is the fifth most spoken language in Australia.

CAAR undertakes a range of projects and activities aimed at broadening awareness and understanding between Australia and the Arab world, promoting a greater understanding of mutual foreign policy interests, encouraging activities that lead to mutual economic benefit, and promoting Australia’s image in the Arab world.
