Improved Consular Assistance for Australian Travellers to Gallipoli

I am pleased to announce that early next year Australia will open a Consulate in Canakkale, located close to the Gallipoli Peninsula, in order to provide consular assistance for the growing number of Australians who visit the Anzac battle sites each year.

The Consulate will offer a full range of consular services for the many thousands of Australians who travel to Turkey for the annual 25 April Anzac commemorations and for the large and increasing numbers who visit the Gallipoli Peninsula, the ancient ruins at Troy and other sites in Canakkale Province at other times of the year. The Consulate will also have responsibility for western Turkish provinces of Tekirdag, Edirne, Kirklareli, Izmir, Baliksehir, Bursa and Manisa which include the popular tourist destinations of Izmir, Kusadesi and Bursa.

In addition to its consular responsibilities, the Consulate will provide an administrative base for the organisation of the annual Anzac commemorations and will have a key role in liaising with the local Turkish authorities in Canakkale.

The Consulate will initially be housed in temporary premises until a permanent location for the Consulate is established by early 2007.

The establishment of the Consulate will further strengthen the growing relationship between Australia and Turkey and in particular will strengthen the bonds between Australia and the people of Canakkale who have always provided a warm welcome to the many Australians who visit the province.
