Diplomatic Appointment: Consul-General to Bali

I have today announced the appointment of Mr Bruce Cowled as Australia's Consul-General in Bali. Mr Cowled will replace Mr Brent Hall who has been Consul-General since January 2003. He is expected to take up his appointment in December 2005.

Australia's association with Bali is an important part of its broader relationship with Indonesia. Australia has established extensive economic and people-to-people links with Bali, including significant Australian investment in the Balinese hospitality sector. The Consulate-General provides consular and passport services to Australians in Bali, and to Canadian nationals under an agreement for the sharing of consular responsibilities. In 2004-05 some 344,000 Australians visited Indonesia, with many of them visiting Bali.

The terrorist attacks in Bali in 2002 and 2005 have underscored the importance of continued close cooperation between Australia and Indonesia to combat terrorism. Our Consulate-General and Balinese authorities have worked together intensely following both of the Bali bombings. This partnership underscores the very substantial, longstanding and wide-ranging links between our Governments, peoples and business communities .

Mr Cowled is an experienced staff member of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and is currently Acting Assistant Secretary, Finance Services and Systems Branch, a position he has held since March 2005. Mr Cowled has held a variety of positions in Canberra including Director, Financial Services Section (2002-05), Executive Officer, Evaluation and Audit Section (2000-02), and Executive Officer, Internal Audit Section (1995-96).
