Hugh Dunn

I note with sadness the passing of Hugh Alexander Dunn.

Hugh was Australia's Ambassador to China from 1980-84 and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1985 for his service in the field of international relations, and in the development of relations with China.

Hugh was born in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia in 1923 and educated at the Brisbane Boys College. During the Second World War he saw active service in New Guinea and the Philippines. He returned to Australia to study at the University of Queensland and later won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, where he studied classical Chinese language, history and philosophy.

In a public service career spanning more than 30 years, Hugh was Ambassador to Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Seychelles (1978-80), Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Peru ( 1973-76), and Taiwan (1969-72). He also served in Japan, South Korea, the United States, India and South Vietnam.

After leaving the public service in 1985, Hugh maintained an active interest in furthering Australia's relationship with China, through his Chairmanship of the Brisbane China Committee and as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Queensland, where he wrote extensively on Sino-Australian relations and the teaching of the Chinese language.

I extend my condolences to Hugh's family and to his many friends.
