Diplomatic Appointment: Ambassador to Iran

I have today announced the appointment of Greg Moriarty as Australia's Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran. He will replace Jeremy Newman, who has been Ambassador since April 2001. Mr Moriarty is expected to take up his position in March 2005.

Australia values its constructive relationship with Iran, which includes serious and frank dialogue on important issues. Iran has a substantial role to play in contributing to both international and regional security and we look forward to working together to further shared interests in this area. Our relationship has a solid base in trade - Iran has traditionally been one of Australia's leading destinations for exports of agricultural commodities. Iran is a market of significant interest and potential to Australian companies including in the education, energy and mining sectors. One of our aims is to diversify our commercial relationship beyond traditional commodities.

Mr Moriarty was most recently Assistant Secretary, Maritime South East Asia Branch, in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Before taking up this position in early March 2003, he was Director of the Papua New Guinea Section. His previous experience includes service as Counsellor and head of the Political Section in the Australian Embassy in Indonesia, and as First Secretary in the Australian High Commission in Papua New Guinea. He has also been Director of the South Pacific Bilateral Section in DFAT and Chief Negotiator with the four-country Peace Monitoring Group in Bougainville. Prior to joining the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, he worked as an intelligence analyst with the Department of Defence.

Mr Moriarty has a BA (Hons) degree from the University of Western Australia and a Masters Degree in Strategic and Defence Studies from the Australian National University. He is married with two children.
