Diplomatic Appointment - Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the OECD in Paris

I have today announced the appointment of Ms Veronique Ingram as Australian Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Australia to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris.

Ms Ingram will replace Mr Ian Forsyth who has been Ambassador and Permanent Representative since September 2001. Ms Ingram is expected to take up her appointment in January 2005.

The OECD was formally established on 30 September 1961. Australia became a full member in 1971. The 30-member OECD is the premier international consultative forum for economic, social and trade policy issues for the world's industrialised countries and develops and implements international arrangements in several areas. It undertakes analysis and provides advice on these issues for member countries. The OECD provides some of the world's most authoritative economic, trade and social analysis and statistics. Many of its products are also available to the public and the international community.

The Australian Government is an active participant in the OECD activities and a strong contributor to its policy products. Australia benefits through the opportunity to exchange ideas and develop policy best practice across the broad range of government activities covered by the OECD work program.

Ms Ingram is currently General Manager, Financial System Division, in the Australian Treasury. She has held this position since November 2003. Also at the Treasury, Ms Ingram was the Chief Adviser, International ( 2001 - 2003) and head of the Corporate Governance and Accounting Policy Division (1 996 - 2001). Prior to this Ms Ingram was an officer of the Attorney-General's Department, which she joined in May 1983.

Ms Ingram has most recently held the position of Chair of the OECD Steering Group on Corporate Governance which revised the OECD Principles of Corporate Governance endorsed by Ministers last May. She has also been actively involved in the Financial Stability Forum's work on standards and codes and APEC's work on corporate governance and financial reporting.

Ms Ingram's OECD experience will equip her well to advance Australia's interests in the OECD.

Ms Ingram was born in 1957. She has degrees in Political Science and Law from the Australian National University and is married with one daughter.
