Diplomatic Appointment: Ambassador to Micronesia

I have today announced the appointment of Corinne Tomkinson as Australian Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Palau and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. She will also be non-resident Consul-General to the US territory of Guam and the US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Ms Tomkinson will replace Brendan Doran PSM who has been Ambassador since November 2001. Ms Tomkinson is expected to take up her appointment in November 2004.

Australia's relations with the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Palau, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are warm and friendly. Defence, law enforcement, development cooperation, trade and sport are important elements of our relationship with the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and Palau. Australia's contacts with Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands continue to expand, particularly our trade and tourism links. Australia and the Micronesian States cooperate through the Pacific Islands Forum to promote economic growth, sustainable development, good governance and security and to advance their interests through sector-specific regional organisations and the UN and its agencies.

Ms Tomkinson is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and is currently Director, Intelligence Policy and Liaison Section. She has also held the positions of Director of the Pacific Islands, North East Asia, Images of Australia and APEC Branches and has extensive experience on UN economic, social, environmental and human rights issues.

Overseas, Ms Tomkinson has served in Australian diplomatic missions in Pretoria (1995-6); New York (1990-95); Port Moresby (1985-87); and Madrid (1977-80). In 2002 she served as Chief Negotiator in the Bougainville Peace Monitoring Group in Papua New Guinea.

Ms Tomkinson holds a Bachelor of Economics degree with Honours from the Australian National University and a Master of Arts degree in Strategic Studies from Deakin University. She is a fellow of the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies at the Australian Defence College, and has been a United Nations Disarmament Fellow.
