Diplomatic Appointment: Consul-General in Honolulu

I have today announced the appointment of John Quinn as Australia's Consul-General in Honolulu.

Mr Quinn will replace Paul Robilliard who has been Consul-General since July 2001 and is expected to take up his appointment in August 2004.

The Consulate-General's key function is maintaining close liaison with US Pacific Command (PACOM), which is headquartered in Honolulu. PACOM directs and coordinates US military forces in the Asia-Pacific region. PACOM plays an important role in shaping the United States' ongoing strategic and security engagement in this region.

The Consulate-General also helps Austrade and Invest Australia promote Australia's trade and investment interests in Hawaii and Alaska. The mission also provides consular services for Hawaii and Alaska.

Mr Quinn is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and is currently Head of the Department's Iraq Task Force. In Canberra, Mr Quinn has also held the positions of Assistant Secretary in the Department's Middle East and Africa Branch, Nuclear Policy Branch and International Cultural Relations Branch.

Overseas, Mr Quinn has served as Minister-Counsellor (Political) in Tokyo and Deputy Head of Mission in Manila. His earlier postings were to the Australian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and to Kenya.

Born in Sydney in 1954, Mr Quinn graduated with First Class Honours in Artsand Law from Sydney University. He is married with two children.
