Diplomatic Appointment: High Commissioner to Kiribati

I have today announced the appointment of Jurek Juszczyk as Australia's High Commissioner to Kiribati.

Mr Juszczyk will replace Colin Hill who has been High Commissioner since February 2000 and is expected to take up his appointment in March 2003.

Australia and Kiribati have a long-standing friendly relationship. Australia's High Commission was established in Tarawa in 1981, shortly after independence. Wide-ranging ties exist, particularly in development assistance, trade and investment, defence cooperation and people-to-people links. Australia and Kiribati have also worked closely together for many years as members of the Pacific Islands Forum, the Commonwealth and more recently, the United Nations.

Mr Juszczyk is an experienced career diplomat and is currently Director of the Thailand, Vietnam and Laos Section. Other positions include Director, Cultural Relations Section (1997-99) and Director, International Economic Analysis Section (1991-93).

Overseas, Mr Juszczyk has served as Counsellor, The Hague (1994-97); First Secretary, Beijing (1988-91); First Secretary, Stockholm (1982-86); First Secretary, Lagos (1980-82); and Third Secretary, Jakarta (1975-77).

Educated at Monash University, Mr Juszczyk holds a Bachelor of Economics degree with Honours and a Bachelor of Laws degree. He is married with two children.
