Diplomatic Appointment: High Commissioner to Kiribati
I have today announced the appointment of Jurek Juszczyk as Australia's
High Commissioner to Kiribati.
Mr Juszczyk will replace Colin Hill who has been High Commissioner
since February 2000 and is expected to take up his appointment in
Australia and Kiribati have a long-standing friendly relationship.
Australia's High Commission was established in Tarawa in 1981, shortly
after independence. Wide-ranging ties exist, particularly in development
assistance, trade and investment, defence cooperation and people-to-people
links. Australia and Kiribati have also worked closely together for
many years as members of the Pacific Islands Forum, the Commonwealth
and more recently, the United Nations.
Mr Juszczyk is an experienced career diplomat and is currently Director
of the Thailand, Vietnam and Laos Section. Other positions include
Director, Cultural Relations Section (1997-99) and Director, International
Economic Analysis Section (1991-93).
Overseas, Mr Juszczyk has served as Counsellor, The Hague (1994-97);
First Secretary, Beijing (1988-91); First Secretary, Stockholm (1982-86);
First Secretary, Lagos (1980-82); and Third Secretary, Jakarta (1975-77).
Educated at Monash University, Mr Juszczyk holds a Bachelor of Economics
degree with Honours and a Bachelor of Laws degree. He is married
with two children.
