Diplomatic Appointment: High Commissioner to Samoa
I have today announced the appointment of Mr Peter Hooton as Australian High Commissioner to Samoa. Mr Hooton will replace Mr Paul O'Callaghan who has been High Commissioner since January 1998.
Australia's relations with Samoa are close and longstanding, embracing development assistance, trade and investment, defence cooperation and strong people-to-people links. Australia and Samoa work closely and constructively together in a number of regional and international forums including the South Pacific Forum, the Commonwealth and the United Nations.
Mr Hooton is currently Director of the Pacific Regional Section in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He has served previously in the Pacific, most recently as Deputy Head of Mission in Suva (1994-96). His other overseas assignments have included Deputy Head of Mission in Nairobi (1991-94) and in Riyadh (1987-89).
