Diplomatic Appointment: High Commissioner to Tonga

I have today announced the appointment of Mr Angus Macdonald, as Australia's next High Commissioner to the Kingdom of Tonga.

Mr Macdonald replaces Mr Andrew Mullin, who has been High Commissioner since November 1995. He is expected to take up his appointment in December 1999.

Australia has a friendly relationship of long-standing with Tonga. Wide-ranging ties exist, particularly in development assistance, defence cooperation and people-to-people links. Australia and Tonga work together as members of the United Nations, the South Pacific Forum and the Commonwealth. The bilateral relationship was enhanced by the visit of the Tongan Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence, HRH Prince 'Ulukalala Lavaka Ata, to Australia in June 1999.

Mr Macdonald was, until recently, AusAID Counsellor in Geneva. He joined AusAID/AIDAB in 1975. From 1981-84 he served as First Secretary (Development) in Bangkok, and was Director, Corporate Planning and Budget Section from 1985-86. He served as Counsellor (Development), Australian Embassy, Rome (1986-89) and was Director, Africa Section (1990-95). He was appointed Counsellor (Development) at the Australian Mission to the UN in Geneva in October 1995.

Mr Macdonald was born in 1945 and is married with three children. He holds degrees from Sydney University, the Australian National University and the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.
