Appointment of Australian Consul-General, Guangzhou.

I have today announced the appointment of Ms Zena Armstrong as Australian Consul-General in Guangzhou. Ms Armstrong will replace Ms Maurine Chong, who has been Consul-General since November 1992.

Southern China, centred in particular on the Pearl River delta, is a region fundamental to China's economic and political fabric. Its role as a spearhead of China's economic and market reform has spurred impressive economic growth. As such, it is a region of growing importance for Australian trade and investment.

Ms Armstrong is a senior officer of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade which she joined in 1991. From 1980 to 1991 Ms Armstrong worked as a journalist in Melbourne and Canberra. She is currently serving as Counsellor (Public Affairs) in Beijing. Ms Armstrong gained a Bachelor of Arts degree at Melbourne University.

Ms Armstrong is expected to take up her appointment in June 1996.
