28 June 1995

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Gareth Evans, today announced the appointment of Mr Mati Peekma as Australia's first Honorary Consul to Estonia. Mr Peekma is the Managing Director of Kalev Confectionery, a large well-known company in Estonia.

Mr Peekma was the first Fellow to be selected from Estonia under the Australian Program of Training for Eurasia (APTEA) in 1992. During his time in Australia he obtained a certificate in business administration from the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne and undertook a work placement with an Australian confectionery firm. Mr Peekma also holds a Diploma of Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Tallinn. He is an Estonian citizen.

Australia was one of the first countries to recognise Estonian independence in August 1991. Australia continues to support Estonia's development, especially its transition to a market economy through multilateral organisations such as the European Bank for Reconstruction (EBRD) and bilaterally through the Australian Program for Training in Eurasia (APTEA). APTEA provides an important opportunity for Australia to assist in Estonia's reforms by training in management-related areas. APTEA is part of Australia's commitment to development of the former socialist economies of central and eastern Europe.
