Diplomatic Appointment: High Commissioner to Tonga

13 October 1995

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Gareth Evans, today announced the appointment of Mr Andrew Mullin as Australian High Commissioner to the Kingdom of Tonga. Mr Mullin replaces Ms Jennifer Rawson, who was High Commissioner from March 1993.

Australia's relationship with Tonga is based on mutual respect and support. This is reflected in long-standing links across a range of constructive programs including economic and human resource development, defence cooperation and health, together with a close partnership in South Pacific bodies and regional initiatives.

Mr Mullin is a senior career officer of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He joined the then Department of Foreign Affairs in 1971 and served in Brasilia from 1973 to 1975. From 1979 to 1980 he was Deputy High Commissioner in Colombo, and in 1981 he was Acting High Commissioner in Apia. From 1983 to 1986 Mr Mullin was Counsellor in Athens and from 1988 to 1990 he was Director of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Section in Canberra. From 1991 to 1993 he was Counsellor in Seoul, and he is currently the Departmental speechwriter.

Mr Mullin is expected to take up his appointment in November 1995.
