Turkey ANZAC Day commemorations

I will represent the Australian Government at ANZAC Day commemorations on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey on 24-25 April. I will also represent the Australian Government at the Turkish International and Memorial Services, the French Memorial Service and the Commonwealth and Irish Services.

The Gallipoli campaign commenced on 25 April 1915, with the ANZAC landing near Gaba Tepe (later named Anzac Cove). By the end of the campaign, the ANZACs and the British, French and Indian troops who also fought on the Gallipoli peninsula, suffered 141,000 casualties. Approximately 8,700 Australians lost their lives.

At Anzac Cove, I have the honour of delivering a remembrance speech at the Dawn Service. I will also deliver remarks at the Australian Memorial Service at Lone Pine and participate in the New Zealand Memorial Service at Chunuk Bair.

I will convey the deep appreciation of our Government and the Australian people to the Turkish Government and the people of Turkey, for continuing to uphold the memory of those who died at Gallipoli, and in particular, for the manner in which they respect, care for and maintain the sites of sacrifice which are treasured by Australia and New Zealand.

The Australian Government also appreciates the ongoing support provided by the Turkish Government and local officials to help secure and facilitate Gallipoli commemorations each year for visiting Australians.
