Ambassador to Colombia

  • Media release

During my visit to Colombia, I announced the appointment of Ms Sophie Davies as Australia's first resident Ambassador to Colombia and officially opened Australia's first Embassy in Bogota.

Australia and Colombia enjoy a strong and longstanding bilateral relationship. The opening of an Australian Embassy in Bogota strengthens our presence in Latin America and is part of the single largest expansion of Australia's diplomatic network in over 40 years.

Our people-to-people links are strong, with over 15,000 Australians visiting Colombia last year. Colombia is also the second largest source of student enrolments from Latin America, with 17,000 enrolments in 2016.

Our Embassy will promote new areas of cooperation, particularly in agribusiness, education, mining and financial services. Some 45 Australian companies already operate in Colombia with investments worth $3 billion.

The Australian Government looks forward to working with Colombia in the coming 12 months during its Presidency of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru), particularly as we look to expand economic opportunities for Australia in Latin America.

Ms Davies is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and has previously served as Deputy Head of Mission, Australian Embassy, Lima.

Ms Davies holds a Masters of Evaluation from the University of Melbourne; a Masters of Social Science (International Development) from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology; and a Bachelor of Economics/Laws from the University of Sydney.
