Consul-General in Mumbai

  • Media release

Today I announce the appointment of Mr Paul Murphy as Australia’s next Consul-General in Mumbai.

India is the world's fifth-largest and fastest growing major economy and one of Australia's most important regional partners. In 2022-23, India was our fifth-largest export market and our two-way trade totalled $45 billion.

The Consulate-General in Mumbai plays a key role in advancing Australia’s trade, commercial and investment interests in the western states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa.

As India’s financial and commercial capital, Mumbai is a hub for Australian businesses and an important market for Australian services.

Australian universities are building educational links in Gujarat’s International Finance Tec-City (GIFT).

Mr Murphy is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Director, Free Trade Agreement Sectoral Services Section.

He has previously served overseas as Consul-General in Lae and at the Australian High Commission in Papua New Guinea.

I thank former Consul-General Peter Truswell, and most recently Acting Consul-General Majell Hind, for their contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Mumbai.
