Strengthening public sector leadership in Papua New Guinea

I welcome the completion of the first course for senior Papua New Guinea public servants funded under Australia's new Pacific Leadership and Governance Precinct initiative.

Twenty-seven senior PNG officials participated in the Executive Short Course in Governance and Public Policy last week in Port Moresby, which was delivered by the University of Queensland in partnership with the University of Papua New Guinea.

As a friend and a partner of Papua New Guinea, Australia recognises that an effective and ethical public sector is vital for PNG's stability and prosperity, enabling more citizens to fully participate in the economy. An enhanced public sector increases business confidence and promotes a strong private sector, the driver of long-term, sustainable economic growth.

The Precinct will provide high-quality education and training in public sector leadership and skills. This initiative will also establish stronger partnerships between Australian and PNG education institutions and training organisations.

Institutions such as the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Australia and New Zealand School of Government will deliver intensive leadership courses in PNG in coming weeks.

The University of Queensland and the Australian National University will develop and deliver public sector-focused programs and university qualifications.

The Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) and Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) Solutions will also partner with the PNG Institute of Public Administration-School of Government in certificate and diploma-level training for PNG public servants.
