Consul-General in Shanghai
Today I announce the appointment of Mr John Williams as Australia’s next Consul-General in Shanghai.
Shanghai is one of the most significant commercial and financial centres in the region, and home to Australia’s largest expatriate community in mainland China.
In addition to Shanghai, the Consulate-General covers five provinces in eastern China, representing more than one third of Australia’s two-way trade with China, in sectors such as manufacturing, services, agriculture, transport and tourism.
Mr Williams is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Acting High Commissioner, Australian High Commission, Suva.
He has previously served overseas as Ambassador to Laos and had postings in Indonesia and Thailand.
I thank former Consul-General Dominic Trindade for his contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Shanghai since 2019.
