Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva

  • Media release

Today I announce the appointment of Ms Clare Walsh as Australia’s next Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.

Through the UN and its specialised agencies in Geneva, the world comes together to tackle some of our greatest challenges.

As a founding member of the UN, Australia works with other states on human rights, humanitarian action, disarmament, labour, global health, digital technologies and refugees and migration.

Australia seeks a world that is peaceful, stable and prosperous, that is governed by agreed rules and norms.

Ms Walsh is a senior career officer with DFAT and is currently the Chief Operating Officer. She has previously served overseas as Deputy Head of Mission in Japan.

In Canberra she has held a number of senior multilateral, development, climate change and corporate positions in DFAT and other Commonwealth agencies.

I thank outgoing Ambassador Amanda Gorely for her contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Geneva UN since 2022.
