Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran

  • Media release

Today I announce the appointment of Mr Ian McConville as Australia’s next Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Australia has maintained an uninterrupted diplomatic presence in Iran since our Embassy opened in Tehran in 1968.

The Embassy enables us to deliver messages directly to the Iranian regime and to provide consular assistance to Australians.

Mr McConville will advocate for Australia’s interests in Iran including on human rights, regional conflict, nuclear non-proliferation, people smuggling and terrorism.

Mr McConville is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Chief of Protocol.

He has previously served overseas as High Commissioner to Nigeria and to Mauritius, and served at diplomatic missions in the Republic of Korea, Switzerland (UN), Cambodia and Pakistan.

I thank outgoing Ambassador Lyndall Sachs PSM for her contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Iran since 2019.
