Ambassador to Egypt

  • Media release

Today I announce the appointment of Dr Axel Wabenhorst as Australia’s next Ambassador to Egypt. Dr Wabenhorst will also be accredited to Eritrea and Sudan.

Egypt is Australia’s largest investment and trading partner in Africa. Our longstanding ties are based on a strong economic relationship and cooperation on multilateral and security issues.

Australian Defence Force personnel make an important contribution to the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) supervising the implementation of the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty in the Sinai.

Australia is working closely with Egypt as it prepares to host the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) in November.

Dr Wabenhorst is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Director, Afghanistan Political section.

He has previously served overseas as Australia’s Ambassador to Qatar and in Iran, Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

I thank outgoing Ambassador Glenn Miles for his contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Egypt since 2018.
