Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism
Today I announce the appointment of Ms Gemma Huggins as Australia’s next Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism.
The Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism leads Australia’s international engagement on counter-terrorism and countering violent extremism, and sits on the Australia-New Zealand Counter-Terrorism Committee.
The global threat of terrorism and violent extremism is dynamic and constantly evolving. Close and effective engagement with bilateral, regional, multilateral and non-government partners is vital to enhance counter-terrorism capability at home, in our region and beyond, to keep Australians safe and Australia secure.
Ms Huggins will represent Australia’s interests at key international fora, advance cooperation with Australia’s international partners, and work closely with agencies across Government, as well as non-government partners, to support national counter-terrorism efforts and address threats identified in A Safer Australia – Australia’s Counter-Terrorism and Violent Extremism Strategy 2025.
Ms Huggins brings extensive counter-terrorism experience to the role. She was most recently Assistant Secretary Middle East Branch in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Her previous diplomatic roles include Australian Deputy Head of Mission to Lebanon and a posting to Zimbabwe.
I wish to thank former Ambassador Richard Feakes for the progress made during his appointment towards strengthening Australia’s regional and international counter-terrorism partnerships.
