Statement on Maldives election

  • Media release

Australia welcomes the reports of high voter turnout and a peaceful day of polling for the Presidential elections in Maldives. This was a testament to the democratic spirit of the people of Maldives. Australia strongly supports the rights of citizens in any country to openly and freely choose those who govern them.

The provisional results announced by the Election Commission indicate that the Opposition candidate, Mr Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has won the Presidential election and we note that President Yameen has said he will accept the result. It is vital that events proceed peacefully and that the outcome respects the expressed will of the Maldives people.

Australia congratulates Mr Solih on his victory and we look forward to working with him.
