Visit to the United Nations

I will be attending the High-Level Week of the United Nations General Assembly, in New York, the largest annual gathering of world leaders.

A key priority will be to continue Australia's substantial contributions to global peace and security and the rules based international order. I will co-chair the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Kishida, deliver statements at the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum to bolster counter terrorism strategies and the UN Peacebuilding Pledging Fund Conference.

I will attend the ministerial meeting of the International Syria Support Group co-hosted by the United States and Russia. I will attend a ministerial meeting hosted by Belgium, Iraq and the United Kingdom to discuss efforts to bring Da'esh to justice and I will meet fellow Joint Investigation Team foreign ministers to discuss accountability for the downing of flight MH17.

With an unprecedented 65 million displaced people around the world, refugees and migration will be the most pressing issue at this year's meeting. I will underline the need for strong and coordinated collective action to address humanitarian crises, such as that in Syria.

I will engage with global leaders to underscore Australia's commitment to promoting human rights, and demonstrate our strong credentials for our candidacy for the 2018-2020 term on the UN Human Rights Council.

I will also chair a meeting of Australia's innovationXchange International Reference Group, hosted by Michael Bloomberg, on improving nutrition in the developing world, and participate in a meeting on addressing global health threats such as pandemic diseases.

I will encourage the global community to join Australia in combatting modern slavery and forced and child labour, and with Melinda Gates I will highlight practical efforts to empower women and girls.

At the Major Economies Forum I will reaffirm Australia's intention to ratify the Paris climate agreement.

Over the course of the week I will hold over 35 meetings with leaders, foreign ministers and heads of UN agencies.
