Visit to Grenada and the United States

I have just completed a successful visit to Grenada, announcing a new partnership to support coral reef preservation in the Caribbean through the sharing of information with Australia's Great Barrier Reef experts.

I met with Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers from Caribbean nations at the CARICOM Summit - the biannual Meeting of the Heads of Government from the Caribbean.

My discussions highlighted the broad range of issues where Australia and Caribbean nations are working closely together - including in the Commonwealth, cooperation in policy and governance, capacity building, security and sport.

In particular my visit focussed on our shared expertise and knowledge in terms of ensuring the protection and management of reefs. The Caribbean hosts many coral reefs including the world's second largest reef.

I announced further funding for Reef Guardians - a project run by local communities to promote education and awareness about sustainable reef management practices.

A Small Island Developing States (SIDS) event was the context for an announcement of new Australia Awards Fellowships to help build the coral reef management capacity of the Caribbean.

I also visited Miami, a major hub for business and tourism and the United States' gateway to Central and Latin America.

During my visit, I met with politicians including the Lt Governor of Florida, the Mayor of Miami Dade County, academics, media and business executives.

My visit, organised by Australia's Honorary Consul Don Slesnick, highlighted the economic dynamism of southern Florida and that there are growing opportunities for Australian business and investment.

I also discussed perspectives on the United States' relations with Latin America, the Caribbean and Cuba.
