Supporting education in Myanmar

The Australian Government isextending its assistance to children in Myanmar, helping them to attend andstay in school and receive a better quality education.

Australia will provide anadditional $71.5 million over four years (2017-2020) to assist Myanmar addressbarriers that prevent children from getting the education opportunities theydeserve.

Of this funding, $51.5million will support the Myanmar Government's Decentralizing Funding to SchoolsProject.

This project, operated inpartnership with the World Bank, will fund a teacher mentoring program andearly grade learning assessments. It will also extend the successful schoolgrants and stipends program, which has provided grants to over 47,000 schoolsand stipends to help over 158,000 disadvantaged children stay in school.

Australia will also provide$20 million for the new Myanmar Education Quality Improvement Program, whichwill assist Myanmar's Ministry of Education to better monitor educationreforms, improve management across the sector and implement Myanmar's newNational Education Strategic Plan.

Australia'sinvestment in education will give Myanmar's next generation a better chance toparticipate in the country's political and economic transformation.
