Humanitarian assistance to Yemen

  • Media release

Today I announce that the Australian Government will provide a package of assistance to address the immediate needs of the people of Yemen.

The humanitarian crisis in Yemen has worsened significantly. Over three million people have been displaced from their homes and 14 million people do not have sufficient food, including seven million on the verge of starvation.

Our assistance of $10 million will help to deliver food, healthcare, water and sanitation to protect the lives of vulnerable people, including women and children affected by the crisis.

Australia's support will be provided through the World Food Programme, international humanitarian organisations and Australian NGOs operating in the region. This package of assistance is in addition to our regular funding to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund and humanitarian organisations operating in Yemen.

Australia will continue to work with other donors, countries in the region and humanitarian partners to provide aid to the most vulnerable people.

We continue to urge all those involved in the conflict to return to negotiations towards a permanent solution to the conflict.
