First Australian Minister Visit to Iran in 12 years

  • Media release

Today I will undertake the first visit to Iran by an Australian Minister in over a decade.

I will meet with Foreign Minister Zarif and other Iranian leaders to discuss important bilateral, regional and international issues affecting both of our countries.

During my visit, I will also discuss cooperation with Iranian authorities in countering people smuggling, which remains a concern to both countries.

My visit comes at a time when the Middle East region is facing significant challenges. I will also discuss important regional developments, including the conflict in Iraq, where Australia is supporting Prime Minister Abadi's Government in its efforts to build the capacity of its security forces to counter the terrorist organisation Daesh.

Australia's support for negotiations between the permanent members of the Security Council and Germany (P5+1) and Iran towards a comprehensive nuclear agreement will be discussed.

The nuclear agreement will address international concerns about Iran's nuclear program. The parameters for a final deal announced in Lausanne was a welcome development.
