Fiji - Tropical Cyclones Josie and Keni

The Australian Government extends its sympathies to the Government of Fiji, and to the people of Fiji who have been affected by the Tropical Cyclones Josie and Keni in recent weeks.

Tropical Cyclone Keni passed to the west of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu, as a Category 3 storm on the night of Tuesday 10 April. As a result of destructive winds, heavy rainfall and flash flooding, particularly on the island of Kadavu, nine people are confirmed dead and more than 8,000 people are displaced.

At Fiji's request for assistance, Australia is providing $85,000 to the Fijian Red Cross Society to distribute hygiene and sanitary supplies to those hardest hit by Tropical Cyclone Keni.

Tropical Cyclone Keni compounded the devastation in Fiji caused by Tropical Cyclone Josie last week, which caused significant flooding, particularly in the west and north of Viti Levu.

Australia provided up to $50,000 to the Government of Fiji in support of relief efforts in response to Tropical Cyclone Josie.

DFAT has not received any requests for consular assistance from Australian citizens.

Fijian authorities are currently conducting a full damage assessment to determine further needs. Australia stands ready to provide further assistance if required.
