Australia welcomes Myanmar ceasefire agreement

  • Media release

News that the Government of Myanmar and ethnic armed groups have reached agreement on a nationwide ceasefire represents an important breakthrough after 60 years of conflict.

Australia has been a strong supporter of the locally-led peace process in Myanmar with a total contribution of $12 million assistance since 2012. We continue to support the country's political, social and economic reform.

While there will be more negotiations on a framework for political dialogue, this agreement is an important foundation for improving trust and encouraging cooperation on all sides.

Australia congratulates the Union Peacemaking Work Committee and the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team for their dedication and commitment in coming to an agreement and for building respect between all parties.

While there are still risks from ongoing hostilities in some areas of the country, we believe this agreement can advance the interests of all sides in Myanmar and set the foundation for lasting peace.
