Australia welcomes Kofi Annan led report on Rakhine State

It is vitalthat the Government of Myanmar does everything in its power to protect all itscitizens, including persecuted minorities in Rakhine State in particular.

Australiawelcomes the statement from State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi that theGovernment of Myanmar will promptly implement the large majority ofrecommendations from the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State chaired byformer United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The Advisory Commission was established by State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyibefore the 9 October attacks and subsequent security operations in northernRakhine State. The report aims to address deep societal problems in theState.

Australiasupports these recommendations as an important step in the long-term challengeof addressing complex reconciliation, political, humanitarian, human rights anddevelopment challenges in Rakhine State.

Australia has provided over $32 million in recent years for humanitarian anddevelopment assistance for all communities in Rakhine State and will continueto provide such support.
