Australia supports Philippines after Typhoon Koppu

Australia extends its sympathies and support to the people of Philippines following Typhoon Koppu, known locally as Lando.

Koppu made landfall on Sunday morning in Aurora, Philippines, with category four winds of 210 kilometres per hour. It has brought torrential rains, flooding and landslides, and forced more than 100,000 people into evacuation centres.

The Philippines Government has mobilised considerable domestic resources to support affected communities and provide timely assistance.

As a good friend and neighbour, Australia is well placed to respond to the Philippines Government's request for a range of relief items to support this response.

The Australian Government is providing up to $1 million to support families affected by Typhoon Koppu, delivered through Australia's prepositioned stores in the Philippines. Funding will provide critical items such as tarpaulins for emergency shelter, sleeping mats, blankets, mosquito nets, water containers, hygiene kits and health kits for women. We will also support sexual and reproductive health services through our partnership with the International Planned Parenthood Federation.

An Australian Civilian Corps specialist is currently positioned in the Philippines Department of Social Welfare and Development, providing further support to disaster response logistics and humanitarian relief efforts.

Australia is working closely with the Philippines Government and international partners and will continue to monitor the impact of the typhoon.
