Australia to open new Consulate-General in Surabaya

Today the Prime Minister announced the addition of Surabaya to Australia's diplomatic network.

The Consulate-General in Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, will further increase our links with Indonesia's vibrant east.

Surabaya serves as East Java's key logistics, manufacturing and services hub and is an increasingly important destination for Australian trade and investment. In 2015, Australia was East Java's 10th largest export market, while Australia was East Java's seventh largest import source, including in agriculture.

About 15 per cent of Indonesia's gross domestic product comes from East Java and the region's economy has consistently grown above the national average. Surabaya's airport and port are the second busiest in Indonesia after Jakarta.

Our new Consulate-General will deepen trade and business ties with this dynamic eastern region, including in financial services, education, health, manufacturing and infrastructure.

It will build on Australia's opening of a Consulate-General in Makassar, South Sulawesi, in March 2016, and will be the fourth Australian diplomatic post in Indonesia.
