Journalist: Minister, what are the objectives of your visit to Algeria?

Senator Carr: I'm very proud to be the first Australian Foreign Minister to visit Algeria. It's a great honour to be here and to be greeted by his Excellency. Australia has a lot to discuss with Algeria and in particular, it is an opportunity to canvass views on the full range of issues in this region. I would like the advice and guidance of the Minister on many of the geopolitical issues that the world is talking about and I would also like to look at opportunities for economic cooperation

My visit confirms that Australia is taking now a heightened interest in this part of the world. We came here through Myanmar and then Oman, Saudi Arabia and Istanbul for talks on nuclear non-proliferation, and I am visiting you here in Algeria and then I will visit Morocco. I added Libya, to our itinerary, because of the particular challenge there.

It's a good opportunity and I would enjoy seeing you (Algerian Foreign Minister) in our part of the world.
