It is vital that the Government of Myanmar does everything in its power to protect all its citizens, including persecuted minorities in Rakhine State in particular.

Australia welcomes the statement from State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi that the Government of Myanmar will promptly implement the large majority of recommendations from the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State chaired by former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The Advisory Commission was established by State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi before the 9 October attacks and subsequent security operations in northern Rakhine State. The report aims to address deep societal problems in the State.

Australia supports these recommendations as an important step in the long-term challenge of addressing complex reconciliation, political, humanitarian, human rights and development challenges in Rakhine State.

Australia has provided over $32 million in recent years for humanitarian and development assistance for all communities in Rakhine State and will continue to provide such support.
