I pay tribute to the distinguished career of Peter Varghese, who will be standing down in July 2016 as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Mr Varghese is one of Australia’s most esteemed public servants and diplomats, having served as Secretary since 2012, High Commissioner to India from 2009-2012 and Director-General of the Office of National Assessments from 2004-2009.

He has served in a number of positions overseas and within DFAT during his 38 year career.

Mr Varghese has been a driving force behind the Government’s reform and innovation program.

His management of the complex task of merging the former AusAID development agency with DFAT was exemplary and he has been a strong supporter of innovation including through the establishment of the ‘innovationXchange’.

Importantly, Mr Varghese has been a constant source of sage advice during a time of significant international challenges. I have personally benefited from his calm, competent and insightful counsel.

I wish Mr Varghese every success in his new career as Chancellor of the University of Queensland.
