Australia's Global Ambassador for Women and Girls, Ms Penny Williams, will today visit Fiji to celebrate International Women's Day.
While there, Ms Williams will launch the Violence against Women in Melanesia and Timor-Leste Progress Report at the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre. She will also meet NGO members, including participants of the Young Women in Leadership program run by the Fiji Women's Rights Movement.
"The visit underlines Australia's solid support for regional efforts to improve women's rights in the Pacific," Acting Foreign Minister Dr Emerson said.
In November last year Australia announced it would double development assistance to Fiji. The focus of this assistance includes health care services – including maternal health – improving access to education and creating economic opportunities.
"Advocacy for women and girls in the Pacific is a priority for Australia," Dr Emerson said.
Ms Williams said: "I am pleased to spend my first International Women's Day as Global Ambassador for Women and Girls with the remarkable women of Fiji."
International Women's Day is held on 8 March every year to celebrate the achievements of women around the world.
