UK consular case

Media release

7 June 2013

From a spokesperson:-

An article in this morning's Age newspaper incorrectly asserts that Australia has "washed its hands" of the case of Mr Julian Assange.

This is incorrect, and does not reflect the comments made in Estimates this week.

In Estimates this week, Senator Carr was asked if Australia would make representations to the United States on whether Mr Assange had legal protections under the First Amendment to the US Constitution.

The answer to this question was no. There is no evidence Mr Assange has been charged with offences in the US, so any such representations would be entirely speculative.

Mr Assange faces legal issues relating to allegations of sexual offences in Sweden.

On these matters Australia has provided – and continues to provide – a high level of consular assistance.
