Foreign Minister Bob Carr today announced the appointments of Mr Christopher Gale and Mr Tim McLennan as members of the Executive Committee of the Council on Australia Latin America Relations (COALAR).
Mr Gale is Managing Director of Latin Resources — a Perth-based exploration development company with a focus on iron ore and gold and holding a number of mineral concessions in Peru. Mr Gale has significant executive management experience and commercial, finance and natural resources management skills. In 2008, he established the company Peruvian Latin Resources SAC in Peru, a wholly owned subsidiary of Latin Resources Ltd.
Mr McLennan is the Chief Executive Officer for the International Energy Centre, a position he has held since November 2011. He was Director of Business Development and Commercialisation at CSIRO from 2007 to 2011 and played a critical role in building CSIRO's involvement in Latin America. Mr McLennan's previous positions include Assistant Director of the Australian Geodynamics Cooperative Research Centre and Commercial Development Manager for the CSIRO Division of Exploration.
COALAR was established by the Australian Government in 2001 to contribute to the development of Australia's relations across Latin America. It supports initiatives across priority areas of business, education, tourism, sustainability and cultural promotion.
Australia's merchandise trade with Latin America trade has increased by 60 per cent since 2007, to $8.15 billion last year. More than 165 Australian companies now have a physical presence across the region which is home to 590 million people.
Mr Gale and Mr McLennan replace Mr Charlie Sartain and Mr Richard Warburton AO LVO. Both served on the board of COALAR from 2004-2012, with Mr Warburton filling the role of Vice-Chair from 2010.
