Statement on Attack in Sweden

I express grave concern at the apparent terrorist attack in a central Stockholm yesterday evening (local time).

The attack was timed to cause maximum casualties in a high density shopping precinct.

I am advised that two people have been injured in the attack and one other, thought to be the protagonist, was killed.

If confirmed as a terrorist attack, it would mark the first occasion that Sweden has been targeted in this way on its home soil.

I express Australia's solidarity with Sweden in denouncing this outrage, and our commitment to ongoing efforts to counter terrorism.
