Anniversary of the Kokoda Air Crash

Media release

11 August 2010

Today marks the anniversary of the tragic air crash near the Kokoda Track, which resulted in the death of all 13 on board, including nine Australians. I extend my condolences to those who lost their loved ones in the crash.

The anniversary will be a difficult time for the families and partners of those who died. Our thoughts are with them.

The fact that these nine Australians were looking forward to walking the Kokoda Track, an iconic area of national significance, has made their loss all the more difficult.

Australia is looking forward to the PNG Government completing its investigation into the crash.

Australia is closely following this investigation and any coronial inquest which may follow. Australia’s High Commissioner to PNG has this week reaffirmed Australia’s interest in this matter with the Attorney-General of PNG, who has also conveyed his sympathy and support.

On this sad occasion I again extend my deepest sympathy to all those who lost loved ones in the crash.
