New Government in Thailand
The Australian Government welcomes the formation of a new government in Thailand, sworn-in by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej yesterday.
Australia looks forward to deepening its longstanding and diverse relationship with one of Australia’s most valued partners in the region.
Thailand is a major partner of Australia, including on defence and security, counter-terrorism and combating transnational crime. Later this year, Thailand will assume leadership of ASEAN. As a key dialogue partner of ASEAN, Australia will look to work closely with Thailand on regional and other issues of mutual interest.
Australia and Thailand also enjoy strong and growing trade links, underpinned by the Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement (TAFTA). Thailand is now Australia’s 8th largest trading partner. Two way trade (goods and services) reached $13.7 billion in 2006-07. We look forward to building on TAFTA in 2008 to achieve even greater benefits for both our countries.
Our people-to-people links continue to flourish. Australia is the leading destination for Thai students studying overseas. Some 17,000 Thais studied in Australia in 2007, while nearly 600,000 Australians now visit Thailand each year.
