Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alexander Downer
FA140 / 18 September 2001
Appointment of Chairman of the Board of the Australia-Indonesia Institute
Mr Flood has been a member of the AII Board since 1 September 2000. He succeeds Mr John Reid AO, who has led the AII with distinction during his term as Chair, which he completes in November 2001. Mr Flood's appointment takes effect on 25 November 2001, is part-time and will be for a period of three years from that date.
Mr Flood's appointment marks another milestone in an eminent career in public service. From 1996-1998 he was Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and, of particular relevance to his appointment, Ambassador to Indonesia from 1989-1993. Mr Flood's last diplomatic posting was as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1998-2000.
The AII's work is an important complement to the normal diplomatic interaction between Australia and Indonesia, especially at this time when Indonesia is undergoing significant change. Mr Flood's standing, experience in international affairs and knowledge of Indonesia will be important to the AII's efforts to expand and develop Australian links with Indonesia.
With an annual budget of $900,000, the AII promotes greater mutual understanding between Australia and Indonesia through contact and people exchange across a range of sectors, including the arts, education, media, youth exchange and civil society.
